If you’re struggling with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) you’re not alone. IBS can significantly impact your quality of life, causing a range of unpleasant symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. Many people suffer far too long before seeking help and are amazed at how quickly their symptoms improve with my help. The low FODMAP diet improves symptoms in over 75% of sufferers. So, if you’re looking for IBS advice and support in the new year, try the low FODMAP diet. I’m an IBS Dietitian and I’ll share my expertise and knowledge to support you with online consultations across the UK. Just think – if you started the low FODMAP diet in January, you’re likely to be feeling so much better before the Spring. So, what are you waiting for?
What is the low FODMAP diet?
FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These are short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. For people with IBS, these are poorly absorbed fermenting in the gut, leading to the production of gas and contributing to those uncomfortable symptoms. The low FODMAP diet is tricky to do alone, so that’s where I can help. I share my considerable experience via online consultations, useful books, tips and regular check-ins. This will ensure that you stay on track and feel supported.
The phased approach:
It’s important to note that the low FODMAP diet isn’t for life. It’s a temporary diet to help you identify the foods that trigger your symptoms. I can be there to offer IBS advice and support you through the phases below:
- Restriction Phase: This phase focuses on eliminating high FODMAP foods for 4-8 weeks. This allows your gut to rest and recover. By regular contact, I can ensure that this phase is only as long as it needs to be
- Reintroduction Phase: This crucial step involves reintroducing different types of FODMAPs to identify your individual triggers and tolerance levels
- Personalization Phase: Based on your triggers, together we can create a personalized plan that minimizes your IBS symptoms whilst maintaining a balanced diet
How the low FODMAP diet helps
- Reduced Gas Production: By limiting the intake of fermentable carbohydrates, the low FODMAP diet can significantly reduce gas in your gut, alleviate your bloating and abdominal discomfort
- Improved Digestive Comfort: You’ll experience a noticeable improvement in your overall digestive comfort, with reduced abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits
- Increased Quality of Life: Managing your IBS symptoms can have a profound positive impact on your overall quality of life. This allows you to get back to enjoying social activities, travel and simply feeling better in your own body
